Elisabeth Irwin Letter to Students

Elisabeth Irwin sent this very moving letter to students, written from her hospital bed weeks before her death. In the letter, she encourages the students to “Please sing the songs that we love so well so that I can hear them up here on 68th Street. It needn’t be loud if you just aim them right. I am afraid Mrs. Landeck won’t like this idea but anyway I will be listening.”

Of her dying days, Nick O’Han, LREI historian and Elisabeth Irwin scholar says:

Her courage never crumbled to the end … Her only thoughts at the end were for the children,  concealing the hopelessness of the situation, and encouraging them to look  forward to her returning to school;  back singing with them in morning assembly.
