In 2001, Shoshana and Suzanne’s first grade class read a book about Ruby Bridges, a first grader and the first African-American child to desegregate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis on November 14, 1960.
Inspired by her story, first graders Malina Buturovic and Talia Feldberg wrote lyrics to a song, which they titled, “The Bravest Girl,” about Bridges. Their teacher, Suzanne Cohen, put the lyrics to music, and the whole class recorded the song.
Years later when Ruby Bridges came to visit LREI, Malina and Talia, by then in middle school, sang their song for her.
